UNION'S BEST
UNDER-17: Kelian Shaw, Dylan Johnson - 12 from CQ in 28-man squad
UNDER-15: 10 representatives from CQ
Gladstone players Dylan Johnson and Kelian Shaw have been selected in the Central Queensland Junior Gold Cup rugby union squads.
The two youngsters played in a series of trial matches in Rockhampton on Saturday against Wide Bay and Mackay in hot and sultry conditions.
Dylan and Kelian are in the 28-man under-17 squad.
"We played about four games in a round robin tournament and I played as a winger and fullback," Kelian, 17, said of his experience playing against some of the region's best young talent.
His versatility could be his strength, along with his strong physique and speed.
"I perfer to play in the middle where all the action is and they are also thinking of using me as a forward," Kelian said.
In just his second year of rugby union, Kelian said he prefers this code to league.
"I enjoy it a lot more because there's more space and I am big and fast," the Gladstone High School student said.
Kelian spoke highly of his mate Dylan.
"Dylan is a workhorse and he's so good at working for the ball and stripping the ball out," Kelian said.
Queensland rugby union development officer Trent Sullivan said the two boys produced good performances.
"Kelian played well out wide and showed some good footwork and speed," Sullivan said.
The pair joins 10 others from Central Queensland while the under-15 squad has a total of 10 representatives from CQ.
